Timber Workers Industrial Union #120 - Local #1

Introduction

Since as early as 1985, a battle has been raging on California's north coast over the fate of virgin old-growth redwood forests and the timber economy. The timber industry corporations blame the environmentalists for the destruction of the forest economy, and the environmentalists blame big timber for the destruction of the forest ecology. Both perspectives have been well represented in the mainstream media.

What has not been well documented is the utter, naked exploitation of these workers by the timber capitalists. This site attempts to document that often ignored aspect of this struggle.

Who really cares about the working conditions of loggers, mill workers, and the like? The answers may surprise you.

Labor and Lumber in Northern California - What is the nature of the struggle on the North Coast? Here are some perspectives from past and present IWW members, including:

  • Judi Bari - on the plight of timber workers;
  • Loggers Walt Smith and Duanne Potter
  • Bruce Anderson - on the Timber Wars;
  • Roanne Withers - on the IWW's role in the historical struggle of timber workers; and more.

Historical Background - What conditions led to the north coast timber wars? What is the history of the logging and lumber industry in northwestern California? Here are some records, including:

  • A brief overview by IWW member Bill Meyers;
  • A comprehensive historical chronology by Russell Bartley and Sylvia Yoneda; and
  • A brief account of the Homes-Eureka strike of 1935.

The IWW and Earth First! - What's the connection? How did environmentalists wind up defending loggers and millworkers against timber corporations as well as other environmentalists? Find out how:

  • The IWW and Earth First! combined forces;
  • How some Earth First! activists gave up tree spiking as a tactic; and
  • Why environmentalists need a working class perspective.

The Georgia Pacific Mill PCB Spill - In 1989, workers at the GP Mill in Fort Bragg were injured when a PCB-filled capacitor burst. The company claimed the PCBs were mineral oil. Their AFL-CIO union, IWA Local 3-469 bought the company line, and the local President, once an environmentalist himself, sold out to GP.

Only the IWW and a handful of Earth First!ers stood up for the workers' safety. Eventually, thanks to the IWW, the workers won a substantial settlement.

LP = Logger Poverty - Louisiana Pacific has been a total disaster for the timber workers of Mendocino County; discover how:

  • LP closed five mills in Mendocino County and opened up a replacement mill in Mexico;
  • LP blamed the closures on environmental regulations, even though they secretly admitted they had cut unsustainably for years;
  • LP exploited timber workers for profit and greed.

The Rape of Humboldt County - Find out how a MAXXAM, turned Pacific Lumber from a model of sustainable forestry into an embarrassment to logging and a virtual hell for workers; discover how:

  • MAXXAM ruined Pacific Lumber;
  • How MAXXAM nearly busted the Steelworkers Union at Kaiser and how the IWW and Earth First! helped prevent it.

The Roots of Sustainable Forestry - It doesn't have to be like this. Old Growth forests can be preserved and timber jobs restored, but only if timber workers overthrow the corporate timber system. Find out:

  • Why clear cutting doesn't work;
  • Why jobs have really disappeared;
  • Sustainable logging yields more wood and jobs
  • What logging techniques could replace existing cut and run corporate logging.
