A public memorial for Bruce "Utah" Phillips, who died
Friday night, will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Nevada City Little League field
in Pioneer Park.
Phillips was a big baseball fan and regularly attended
the Little League games in the park.
“He was a fixture at the games,” said Cindy Maple,
executive director of Hospitality House and a friend of Phillips.
The memorial is expected to last two hours. The day had
been decided by Phillips' family during the weekend but the exact time and place
were were not worked out until Tuesday
In addition, “Trains, Tramps & Traditions,” a
celebration of the music of Phillips will be held Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Odd
Fellows Hall, 212 Spring St., Nevada City.
A private burial for Phillips will be held
Thursday.
Phillips, 73, had been suffering from a chronic heart
disease since 2004.
“The house is filled with family and friends, the deep
sense of family and community washes over like a varnish forever binding us
together,” his son Duncan said in a blog on Sunday. “We spent the day telling
stories weeping, telling more stories and weep again.”
