A self-educated worker, Foster held various jobs and traveled to all corners of the country seeking work. He had a deep hatred of the existing order and was determined to find the way to destroy it. He joined the Socialist Party in 1901, but was expelled in 1909 as part of a left-wing faction in the state of Washington. Foster then joined the IWW.
