Making the most of Western Pennsylvania’s Commitment to Human Rights through Effective Implementation of Our Anti Sweatshop Laws

Western PA has a higher concentration of anti sweatshop ordinances and policies than anywhere else in the United States. These ordinances and policies reflect the commitment to Human Rights by our government officials and leadership of our large institutions. They reflect an understanding the systemic violation of Human Rights occurring in the global apparel industry and a genuine sense of responsibility for leveraging our high standards to protect the rights of people everywhere.

Some of these policies have been in effect for more than a decade. No honest evaluation of their impact will indicate that they have been implemented effectively. In spite of some thoughtful efforts, we still are having our apparel procured and licensed from sweatshops. Attempts to remediate sweatshop conditions have been met with factory closures.

Members of the Pittsburgh Anti Sweatshop Community Alliance are partnering with the PA Fair Trade Coalition to host a meeting for policy makers on Thursday February 26th at 6 PM. The goal is to share an evaluation our policies and best-practices, share experiences, develop a framework for collaboration, objectives that will help us implement or anti sweatshop policies effectively.
