pSix trade unionists in Kanaky (New Caledonia) have been sentenced to jail and a further 18 union activists recieved suspended sentences! Gerard Jodar, leader of the Union of Kanaky and Exploited Workers (USTKE), was sentenced to one year prison. Mr Safoka, who works closely with Mr Jodar, has also been condemned to one year in jail. Two other union activists were given ten months of jail, another one six months, another one four months.
The convictions stem from a industrial dispute with Air Caledonie in May, when hundreds of people stormed Magenta airport.
/ppSpeaking to reporters, the USTKE founder and leader of the Labour Party, Louis Kotra Uregei, questions the type of justice that send unionists to prison. ldquo;I strongly condemn this type of decision and Irsquo;m calling on those who have trusted us and trust us to fight alongside us so that this country one day frees itself of this colonial justice.rdquo;
There will be a massive marches in Noumeacute;a this Saturday to demand the freedom of all the political prisoners.

World Leaders Thank Arrestees, Avert Climate Disaster
/ppIn a front-page ad in today's International Herald Tribune, the leaders of the European Union thank the European public for having engaged in months of civil disobedience leading up to the Copenhagen climate conference that will be held this December. It was only thanks to your massive pressure over the past six months that we could so dramatically shift our climate-change policies.... To those who were arrested, we thank you.
There was only one catch: the paper was fake.
/ppLooking exactly like the real thing, but dated December 19th, 2009, a million copies of the fake paper were distributed worldwide by thousands of volunteers in order to show what could be achieved at the Copenhagen climate conference that is scheduled for Dec. 7-18, 2009. (At the moment, the conference is aiming for much more modest cuts, dismissed by leading climate scientists as too little, too late to stave off runaway processes that will lead to millions or even billions of casualties.)

pCostas Gavras Talks About Z, 40 Years Later
June 2009 By John Esther
http://www.zmag.org/zmag/viewArticle/21610
/ppA riveting action thriller about political assassination at the highest levels, this year marks the 40th anniversary of Z. Not the magazine in front of you, but the Academy Award-winning 1969 film co-written and directed by Costas Gavras (AKA Costa-Gavras) about a Judge (played by Jean-Louis Trintignant) who looks into the death of the Deputy (also referred to as Comrade Z, played by Yves Montand) who was about to give a speech on nuclear disarmament. Deliberately dissident, claiming its intention to resemble the U.S.-backed military coup of Greece in the early 1960s and the events surrounding the assassination of democratic Greek politician Gregoris Lambrakis in 1963, Gavras's film touched a nerve with audiences still reeling from the JFK, RFK, and MLK assassinations.
While Gavras has made many political filmsmdash;Missing, Music Box, and Amenmdash;his film titled after the banned letter, which was a symbolic reminder that Lambrakis (he) lives onmdash;remains his masterpiece.

pTeaching Rebellion: Stories from the Grassroots Mobilization in Oaxaca. Review by Hans Bennett - independent multi-media journalist whose website is www.insubordination.blogspot.com
/ppTeaching Rebellion does just that: it teaches us why the 2006 rebellion in Oaxaca, Mexico was so impressive, and is something we can all learn from. Edited by Diana Denham and the CASA Collective, Teaching Rebellion provides an overview of the Oaxaca rebellion. It also gives numerous first-hand interviews from participants, including longtime organizers, teachers, students, housewives, religious leaders, union members, schoolchildren, indigenous community activists, artists and journalists. The diverse interviews allow some of those who led themselves in rebellion to also speak for themselves.

pOn May 1, 1946, 800 Aboriginal pastoral workers from 27 stations in Western Australia walked off the job for better pay and conditions. This was the first industrial action by Indigenous Australians since colonisation in 1788 and predates the famous Wave Hill strike in the Northern Territory by 20 years. The Pilbara strike lasted until 1949, making it the longest strike in Australia's history./ppnbsp;/pp
History leading to the 1946 Pilbara strike
/ppFrom the 1890s to the 1920s it was common for Aboriginal workers to be paid only in rations of food and clothing. During the 1920s some workers began to receive minimal wages. The 1936 Native Affairs Act legally compelled pastoralists to provide shelter and meet the medical needs of their workers, but this was never enforced by the government.
Aboriginal stockmen were housed in corrugated iron humpies, without floors, lighting, sanitation, furniture or cooking facilities. /ppa href=http://www.iww.org.au/node/993 target=_blankread more/a/p

pThere can be no peace so long as hunger and want are found among millions of working people and the few, who make up the employing class, have all the good things of life (like FOOD - editor). IWW Constitution Preamble
/ppThe global financial meltdown has pushed the ranks of the world's hungry to a record 1 billion, a grim milestone that poses a threat to peace and security, the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organization officials said Friday. Because of war, drought, political instability, high food prices and poverty, hunger now affects one in six people. The world's most populous region, Asia and the Pacific, has the largest number of hungry people mdash; 642 million, up 10.5 percent from last year. Sub-Saharan Africa registers 265 million undernourished, an 11.8 percent increase. Even in the developed world, undernourishment is a growing concern, with 15 million in all and a 15.4 percent increase, the sharpest rise around the world/pp

pThere is being reported in the media a call - by the Opposition to the dodgy re-elected regime - for a general strike in Iran on Tuesday June 16th 2009.
/pp I think Iranian women have become canaries of the mind. If you want to guage a society and how free it is, you go to its women. Iranian women have really worked for
their freedom this election. Look at their signature campaign - they choose a non-violent campaign to educate people inside and outside Iran about the country's
repressive laws. They played an important role in the beginning of the last century in bringing about a constitutional revolution. In the beginning of this century, they will
play a central role in changing society towards openness.

p Earlier [last] week, investigators said they had located pieces of the plane in the southern Atlantic Ocean, which might have given them clues to the origin of Air France Flight 447's crash. But on Thursday, Brazilian officials said what they had found was nothing more than run-of-the-mill ocean trash. This highlights a little-seen environmental problem: Scientists say the world's oceans are increasingly filled with junk -- everything from large items like refrigerators and abandoned yachts to small stuff like plastic bottles.

/ppThe building unions in Australia are trying to get rid of the Australian Building amp; Construction Commission (ABCC). It was a recommendation of the Cole Royal Commission to industrial police attack the building unions. Union members support these attempts.
The ABCC is a commission that was set up under the Howard government and continued under the Rudd Labor government. It is used to harrass and intimidate unions and their members. /ppOver 200 workers have been dragged up before the ABCC since it was set up. They are threatened with imprisonment.
CFMEU official Noel Washington was threatened with prison under the Labor government.
