Organizer Training & Union Campaigns

ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE, ORGANIZE!

The Salt Lake City General Membership Branch will be hosting an Organizer Training April 7-9th. Our Fellow Worker from St. George Utah is working on an organizing campaign at his workplace. Support and ideas are needed for this campaign. Any experiences from teachers or other members of IU 620 on organizing drives would be helpful.

We want to maximize the practical benefit of this training. That is, to make a clear link to the skills learned at the training and put them into practice at work.

At this point, as I understand the organizing drive with FW, Andrew is in the most preliminary stages. They have drafted a list of greivances, discussed the IWW and unionizing with some other teachers and staff. Any ideas on how they might jumpstart this and keep the momentum going with their fellow workers?

Any thoughts on other current events and issues within the OBU or the labor movement in general that could be a good point of discussion and study for our organizer training? Please feel free to post ideas and suggestions here.

We have also discussed approaching local Starbucks Baristas in teams to invite them to the organizer training. Any thoughts or experience to share with the SLC GMB is much appreciated.

All for the OBU,

Nate x 356856

Nate,

Along with the organizer/training for some employees we also need to canvas as many starbucks as possible while in Salt Lake.  We should have literature ready or fliers ready with easy access info to further the cause.

Solidarity Forever,

Andrew

IU 620 could be a campaign

Something I've been considering is the commonality among many Utah wobs of working in the educational system. Our Fellow Workers from St. George are all IU 620 members. Teachers are not the only 620 members. In St. George they have a custodian at the school, multiple office support staff etc. Also in Salt Lake several GMB members are custodial or support staff in educational institutions. Think industrially about it for a minute. Could there be the makings of a broad industrial organizing campaign in our current membership. The bridge between teachers and staff is an issue for Andrew at this point. Can janitors and custodians help bridge that gap? Organizing support staff vs. teaching staff. An important issue to address and need for a strategy. Any thoughts . . . ?

Are you guys in contact with the Pittsburgh IU 620 Organizing Committee?  I understand they're a fair ways along at looking at these issues.  They might have some good materials or advice for you all. Plus, they're organizing a conference for all the different IU 620 organizing efforts across the country in July, I think.  Contact their branch.

Paul,

Haven't spoken to anyone at the Pittsburgh GMB yet. FW, Tony R from the branch spoke w/ someone from the Pittsburgh GMB about it. FW, Andrew S would be the best to get in touch with them at this point. He is a teacher and is very far separated geophrically from Salt Lake. He could probably use all the support and experience he can get.
