Tacoma GMB
The Industrial Workers of the World (I.W.W.) was founded 103 years ago as a labor organization that believes in industrial unionism, industrial organizing, direct action and universal working class solidarity. The I.W.W. seeks to organize workers internationally into One Big Union for the purpose of carrying on the day-to-day labor struggles from the greatest possible strength that could be organized and to build a new society within the shell of the old where class conflict no longer exists.
In today's world with the rampant expansion of multinational corporations in what some call globalized capitalism, where our jobs are moved around from country to country, our labor rights are eroding, in some industries the 8-hour day no longer exists, and many of our jobs are becoming more dangerous, the I.W.W. has become even more relevant than it was in 1905.
The only chance working people have in today's world is to organize together across national borders and act in universal working class solidarity. We can no longer afford to depend upon politicians or anyone else to act for us. If we want to gain better working conditions on our jobs and stand up to the new wave of globalized capitalism, we working people must take matters into our own hands and organize together and learn how to act together. Every union organizing drive, every strike or any other form of working class struggle is not just a sympathetic concern of other workers, but as the I.W.W. believes, directly affects all working people and should have the active support of all working people. That is why the I.W.W. Preamble states: "An injury to one is an injury to all".
The I.W.W. realizes that the working class is not just some huge mob of people. The working class is made up of thinking feeling individuals from a great diversity of humanity. We believe that this diversity is not a weakness but rather one of the strengths of our organization. Not only does the I.W.W. have local organizations throughout the U.S., it is an international organization with a worldwide history and current organizations in: Canada, Japan, Australia, The British Isles, Germany and a new organization in formation in Greece.
Tacoma has had a long history in the I.W.W. After a few years of decline, a new Tacoma Area I.W.W. Group has formed and is in the process of becoming a General Membership Branch of the I.W.W. Our organization is open and actively welcomes any working people who wish to join us to rebuild the I.W.W. organization here in the Tacoma Area. Our purpose is both in the area of general education of working people and organizing I.W.W. unions in workplaces in our area. If you are interested in joining us and helping us with our organizational purpose please contact us!
